Score of 5

In September I took the test of TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language. My total score is 193 of 300: This level of score is never relatively high. Especially I got score of 5 in the writing section. What does it mean? See the website of ETS, the provider of TOEFL.

Mr. Okamato, congratulations on the score of 5 on the essay. To earn a 5 they say you have to "display facility in the use of the language" so you should be proud.

Mr.or Ms. Anonymous:

Thank you for appreciating my result of the test. It's a very cheerful comment for me, isn't it? Thank you!

By the way, needless to say, there are a lot of things for me to do for ever higher score, however. The score I got in the test is below the minimum level of the score(CBT), say 213 or 230, that most international students applying for graduate schools need.

I also got a high score in the "structure" section of the test, or 27/30. Hearing section is not very good in the test, however. I have to get used to the speed and the volume of native speakers speaking. For that, I first need to listen to the CD that native teachers speak English at a normal speed. It is usually too fast for me to listen to. First of all, I need to get accustomed to the normal speed.

Furthermore it is not important for me to listen to English, but rather to understand it. Listening to English doesn't stand for understanding it. Understanding is, in other words, knowing what the speaker means. Even if we know the English words that the speaker uses, we can't necessarily know what the speaker really means. English varies with the speakers. It would be more significant for the non-native speakers like me to understand what the speaker talking with them says in English, rather than to get to follow the English that he or she uses.

However it is a longer-term goal for me. Now all I need to do is to get to listen to the fluent English that most native speakers use in their everyday life, I think.
