Excercise: How Old Is My Brother?

I have two brothers. I would like you to answer the present age of the one of them:

In 8 years later, the age of my mother will be four times that of my brother. The difference of their ages is 37. Answer his present age.

Taro, this is unrelated, but I think you should apply to more US universities; about 12, say. Thats what most students do. 4 is pretty risky - it seems you're a risk-loving guy.

Dear mvpy,

Thank you for your important advice. Before I reply to you, I have to say that I am honored to have your post. You have posted a lot of informative and intellectual comments to Dr.Mankiw since Mankiw's blog started. When I see your posts in Mankiw's blog, I enjoy them.

Well, you said that it was very few universities that I had applied to. Yes, I will apply to another more if I find some good universities. However, I wonder if it is a waste of time and money to apply for as many universities as I can.

As you said, I have to do a far more optimal risk management if I want to gain as much benefit from the application to the US graduate schools as possible. And I was also told to apply to more schools by my respected teacher.

I think I have to take important advice whenever I have already made up my mind.

Hi again Taro,
Thanks for your kind words.
Re your schools, it might well be too late to apply to more, but I think you should certainly apply to a few more if possible. Thing is, they get piles of applications and the choice process is very random too.

Mind you, I like the sound of Hawaii a lot! A very good choice. I think location is very important. Check out some places in California, too. Thats where I am (Berkeley) - this is really the place to be. Combining sun and econ is the key to the good life, you know.
The Midwest (ie. Wisconsin) and the East Coast get awful winters. Id drop them! Remember, stuyding for your PhD can take up to six l-o-n-g years, so this is big decision. Finally, be careful with funding. Some are generous and some not so - this is of course a big issue too. In any case, Ill keep my fingers crossed for you.
