消費税などの間接税は景気に影響しないが、そうとは限らない。間接増税は、値上がり感のある商品を買わず、他の商品を買わせ（代替効果）、また商品全体を買い控えさせる（所得効果）。問題は、このどちらが大きいか。所得効果が大きければ、消費は確実に減少する。【終】

The impact of consumption tax on the economy【memo2】

I said that hike in consumption tax never influences GDP, but I don't believe it. The hike will make people buy less of the pricy goods and more of the cheaper goods, and, what's more, the hike will lower their purchasing power and thus their consumption of whole goods. The point is, which effect is greater? The greater the latter effect, the less consumption and GDP.
