On Facebook (2)

The important thing facebook told us is that coworkers, bosses, customers, neighbors and everyone that I see everyday are much more important than old classmates and friends, and people that I saw years ago or really don't know.

Insular people, inside talks and harassing photos in the facebook make no sense at all to us. Mr Zuckerberg, thank you. You told me that the important thing in our life is to actually meet and talk with people without becoming a 'like' pushing robot, and to think of the time to meet them as important.

On Facebook(1)

Facebook has enabled us to keep an easy contact with our old friends or classmates, or people whom we have never met before.

However, Facebook is actually not the way to make us closer, but the way to keep the distance between us. We can feel easy to email someone unknown by making some distance and can feel free to talk inside and enjoy ourselves by unfriending people we don't like.

Inflation makes people rich?

Here in Japan there are some people who insist that rise in prices boost up the economy.
The reasoning is:

Rise in prices of goods and services increases the sales, the sellers' profit and incomes. Higher income increases their spending on goods, and thus the prices. The people will become richer than before.

It sounds reasonable, but it's totally wrong!

Rise in prices of goods and services increases the sales, the sellers'monetary profit and incomes, but the real value of their incomes doesn't change at all: 10% increase in prices leads to 10% increase in monetary income, but the real income, which is evaluated as how much goods and services people can buy, is the same as before the rise in prices. The people won't become richer than before but stay the same.

These people oppose that if monetary policymaker makes the inflation higher, he or she can make lower the real rate of interest, which is the cost of building houses and machines for production, and thus can make people invest more in those durable goods.

However, I can oppose to such an opposition too;

If monetary policymaker makes higher the inflation, the lenders make the rate of interest as high as the announced inflation rate because they must understand the inflation decreases the real value of their lending, and thus monetary policymaker doesn't make lower the real rate of interest and doesn't induce people to spend more.

However, I don't mean that monetary policy doesn't influence the spending at all. It is until they understand that the real income and real interest rate are not changed that monetary policy is effective on the spending.

And so monetary policy does make the people spend more by lowering the real rate of interest, but its effect will soon be weaker as people get to understand that the inflation deteriorate the real value of the money they hold in the pocket.

On White Skin

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2014/01/27/world/white-skin-arose-later-than-thought/#.Uus3s7TIdI0

According to the journal Nature

The cause (for becoming light-skinned), may have been a change in diet and lower vitamin D intake associated with this lifestyle change.

In the absence of natural vitamin D, the human skin can produce its own in contact with the sun. Dark skins synthesize much less than fair ones, creating an evolutionary incentive for change.

Cold Turkey

Cold Turkey.

I first met this word in the article on Paul Volcker's interest rate hike. Now Turkey raised the interest rate to avoid the high inflation.

While Volcker's hike was so quick that the unemployment rate was not even higher than had been expected, Turkey's unemployment rate has already been 9% or 10% high.

Can Turkey exploit the Volcker's legacy? Can the Turkey's and the other Euro economies get damaged? Can this hike lead to turmoil? It doesn't sound good to me..

On Women's Poverty

Almost one-third of singled young (10s-20s) women are defined as 'being in poverty'. Some of them work all the day earning US$1000 a month, while others engage themselves in sex industry.

Is this the third-largest, one of G8 members, and the second-largest contributor to the United Nations, Japan?

Mr Abe is now trying to boost women's participation in the labor force and then the economy as a whole.

I recalled the young army officers who got angry about the situation where poor and unmarried women were sold to prostitution and attacked then the liberal Prime Minister, Mr. Inukai more than 80 years ago.

On School, Career, Marriage and Life

Which university you graduated from influences your later life: The research conducted by one business magazine asks 1,000 Japanese men and women. 95% of them reply that it influences their career and 66% reply that it influences their marriage. What's more, 43% say that it influences their happiness. How to interpret it depends on you, but school you graduated from may not be a minor issue.

What's a Wrong Thing?

Even though I am doing a right thing, many people don't think so, and thus as a result I might have done a wrong thing. Considering Mr Abe's Yasukuni visit, I think so and that I can but explain why I am doing it.

Mr Abe on Davos

Watching Mr Abe on Youtube speaking at Davos, Switzerland, I think he practiced speech and made a difference from any other previous Prime Minister of Japan that has just read a paper in monotone.

Mr Abe certainly seemed to break an old Japanese fashion and he had some intention to do so: He has much to deal with still stagnant Japan's economy, arrogant China's territorial policy, grumpy Korea's attitude, and he had to show he could solve these matters.

Mr Abe visited the Shrine which previous PMs hesitated to visit in order to overcome neighbors' blame.

However, Ms Kennedy then expressed her disappointment at it. Considering the background of her disappointment, I think it understandable that Mr Abe stated at Davos that something unexpected would bring something disastrous.

He may have wanted to push Mr Obama forward to China. At any rate, the Japan's last resort is, as usual, have Mr Obama do something with it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/25/world/asia/a-star-envoys-frankness-puts-kennedy-mystique-to-test-in-japan.html?hp&_r=0

Mr Abe's Choice

Which is better, to try and then fail, or to not try and then not fail? Asked why Japan has been so stagnant, I reply, they've chosen the latter for long. This time Mr Abe, I guess, chose the former and, I hope, it must be a very good choice for us.

On Whaling (2)

Ambassador Caroline Kennedy said to the twitter, "Deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing. USG opposes drive hunt fisheries", and got flooded by comments. I don't eat dolphin and don't know the reason drive hunt is banned. I know that Japanese are blamed for hunting whales, dolphins and, recently included, tuna. If I get hurt by this inhumane hunt and want to stop it, how much am I willing to pay to hunters not to do it? I don't pay a cent.

On Whaling

Few modern Japanese eat dolphins, but there's still commercial fishery of dolphins, why? Some activists oppose fishing dolphins, but Mr Obama never officially opposed to Japan, why? Fishing dolphins is so inhumane and to be banned. The reason is, as some activists reply, that dolphins are intelligent creatures whose stock is limited. In the US, fishing dolphins 'commercially' is banned by law and it's understandable that Ms. Kennedy opposed officially. Why not take Japan to ICJ or IWC?

ならば、何故日本をICJ(国際司法裁判所)または、IWC(国際捕鯨委員会)に提訴しないのでしょ うか?

On Christians and Social welfare

Christians whom I know are kind to each other, but they aren't kind to others. Well, that's not true, but every believer might as well. Historically Christians build churches and the community and try to help each others by collecting contributions from each other. Then all they need is exclude others to keep them from benefiting without donation. Since the birth of modern welfare states, they have included and tried to help all the people with medicare and medicaid, and as a result have a serious fiscal problem. Can we solve the fiscal problem by excluding 'others'?

Cochrane on Aggregate Demand

aggregate demand" is a pretty slippery concept. You demand less of one good if you demand more of another. But how do we demand less of everything? Most "aggregate demand" models are missing a budget constraint. When they do put in a budget constraint, we demand less of everything by demanding more money. That, at least makes sense.

Anyway, Surely something like "aggregate demand" is at stake in turnining a financial crisis into a sharp downturn. The puzzle is why it goes on and on.

Stiglitz Syndrome

Stiglitz Syndrome:
Economists and journalists don't take any responsibility for bad predictions. If you advise company or government, all you have to do is buy stocks or bonds with all the money you have.
